Better known for his work in German alt-rock band, Liquido, 7fields, real name Wolfgang Schrödl, has released a stunning acoustic cover of The Strokes’ ‘Heart In A Cage’. It’s the first solo release from the artist, and will be followed by many more this year.

Liquido, whose song ‘Narcotic’ was voted second best song of all time by a German radio station, went their separate ways in 2008, over personal discrepancies among the band members. Lead singer Schrödl decided to head in the direction of electronic-folk music, and sees 7fields as a journey leading him back home to who he truly is. The name ‘7fields’ is itself symbolic of that journey, an indirect translation of his childhood district, Sieben Morgen.

Speaking of his craft, Schrödl said,

“I compose and pre-produce at home, trying a lot out at my own pace, mostly in the dead of night.

After years of working in bands, it was about time to focus on my own ideas that reflect where I’m standing now in my life.”

Schrödl plays all the instruments himself, and collaborates on the final production with Giovanni Nicoletta, at the Chez Chérie Studio in Berlin, along with Nackt, resident producer at Chez Chérie.

‘Heart In A Cage’, as interpreted by Schrödl, is stripped back, bare and deeply personal. Watch Schrödl’s face on his Vimeo recording of the song:

7fields will follow up ‘Heart In A Cage’ with two original songs, ‘Good To See You’, and ‘The First Day’. Speaking of his choice of The Strokes song as his first solo release, Schrödl said,

“Even as a songwriter, I find it sometimes tempting to newly interpret existing compositions…but only if I can highlight a facet of the song in which I recognise myself, allowing me to only hint at the original. Such was the case for ‘Heart in a Cage'”.

‘Good To See You’ brings to mind the stark vocal style of Lou Reed, and recalls Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere’. ‘The First Day’ reminds us of the more recent works of David Bowie, which isn’t surprising, given Bowie revisited his Berlin style in his later years. In either case, Schrödl’s solo work is a world away from that which he did with Liquido.
