Sigmun Ask Us to Look with ‘Crimson Eyes’

Sigmun, an Indonesian rock band, were formed in 2011. Their debut full length album, ‘Crimson Eyes’, is a prog rock epic, with the band believing that the music they make comes spontaneously from their unconscious minds.

Comprising Haikal Azizi (vocal/guitar), Nurachman Andhika (guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass) and Pratama Kusuma Putra (drums), Sigmun started out as LOUD, but changed their name to Sigmun after it emerged an existing English hard rock band had a similar name. Citing their influences as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the band’s name is derived from that of the famed neurologist, whose theories of the unconscious mind and defence mechanism they admired greatly.

Sigmun, whose songs are mostly based on riffs covered with distortion and overflowing echoes, describe their sound as “bringing a high gain amplifier and drums into a cave”.

Sigmun’s lyrics equally display the influences of the Surrealists as much as Freud, Page and Iommi: the band clearly enjoys exploring absurdity, and their songs become the musical equivalent of a Dali or Magritte.

We felt we were transported to the glory days of metal, when Sabbath and the Zepps ruled the world: the power and intensity with which Sigmun play – feel – their music is mindblowing. ‘Crimson Eyes’ should be listened to in one sitting, it’s 2 parts prog, 1 part psych trance, and 1 part stoner – altogether it’s a worthy successor to those bands from whom they take their inspiration.
