London based hard rock band Redwire do it with a modern edge. Forming in the spring of 2014, they’ve performed in most of the London gig circuit, and now find themselves branching out into other counties. Making a name for themselves with their high energy live shows, Redwire released their self-titled debut EP early this year and built on that momentum with a UK tour in the summer.

The EP opens with the rip roaring, ‘The Captain’ – a snarling, growling song; you’re left in no doubt that this is no pop album – it’s power chords all the way – while maintaining a feeling, somehow, of a sea shanty. It’s a cautionary tale about choosing your friends wisely.

Redwire comprises Marios Patsalovsavis, D Goomani, Aimee Rivers, and Steve Taylor. They do rock with a passion. Lyrically the songs, particularly second song, ‘Run Down Town’ remind us a lot of AC/DC and this is no wonder, as the band cite the legendary Aussie rockers as one of their primary influences.

‘Street Lights’, third song of the EP, is a much gentler, mellow song, more in the style of Guns’n’Roses, and is the perfect showcase for Mario’s skilled vocals.

Song number 4, ‘Born To Lose’, is effectively a statement of intent from Redwire – they may, in the words of the song, ‘be born to lose’ but they’re fiercely determined to succeed.

Last song on the EP, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Lies’, has more than a hint of The Ramones about it, and is fast and furious, with Mario spitting out the words with a venomous passion. His rising vocals soar to the skies with a range that we’re most envious about.

Redwire will be performing at the Barfly, on 15 January, as part of Camden Rocks. See here for more details. You can find Redwire online on Facebook, Twitter, and their website, where you can find more information about where to find their EP.
