Most famous for being the front man of iconic 80s band Ultravox, and co-creator with Bob Geldof of Band Aid and Live Aid, Midge Ure has had an incredible music career spanning over an impressive three decades.
With his song, ‘Vienna’ officially the most popular and respected record of the 80s (as voted by Absolute Radio listeners), Midge obviously has a magic touch when it comes to writing hits that stand the test of time. ‘Vienna’, despite only reaching number 2 in the charts at the time, remains one of the biggest selling records of its year of release, way back in 1981. Ure co-wrote the biggest selling single in the history of the British Singles Charts, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, and his single, ‘If I Was’, from his solo debut album, ‘The Gift’, went straight in at number 1.
Midge Ure is also known as a former member of Thin Lizzy and Visage, and has been a tireless campaigner for ‘Save the Children’. He has an OBE (but no knighthood!), multiple Brit Awards & Ivor Novello awards and once came close to winning Celebrity Masterchef whilst enjoying his cookery hobby.
His fourth solo album, ‘Breathe’, released in 1995 by BMG, had a very Celtic feel, with a plethora of acoustic instruments ranging from Uilleann pipes to mandolins and accordions. The title track was used by Swatch Watches and headed their most successful advertising campaign ever. ‘Breathe’ went triple platinum, giving Midge massive success all over Europe.
Midge Ure is currently on tour, performing ‘Breathe’ in its entirety for the first time. In addition to these songs, he also performs a selection of his other hits, including, ‘Vienna’, ‘Fade to Grey’ and ‘If I Was’, along with songs from his most recent album, ‘Fragile’.
